Near Vision

NEAR VISION LOSS, ALSO KNOWN AS PRESBYOPIA, IS THE CHANGE IN OUR VISION LATER IN LIFE. It affects each and every one of us, usually starting in our 40s. Presbyopia is not related to the shape of the eye, but rather to the elasticity of the lens inside of the eye, and is therefore not treatable by laser vision correction. Patients with presbyopia often have laser vision correction successfully performed to see far away, but find they still need reading glasses for small objects and type less than an arm’s length away.

In many cases, patients with presbyopia have also developed an early cataract. While the cataract symptoms may not yet be visible, both conditions can be treated with a multifocal intraocular lens implant, or IOL. If you are experiencing symptoms of presbyopia, a multifocal IOL could end your reliance on glasses or contact lenses.
