Pre-Surgery Preparation
Before the LASIK procedure, you’ll have a comprehensive eye exam to confirm you’re a good candidate and to take detailed measurements of your cornea. To ensure accurate results remove contact lenses the night before your consultation. The pre-operative preparation typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes and is completely complementary to our patients. The Procedure: How Long Does LASIK Surgery Take?
The actual LASIK treatment is remarkably quick! On average, the entire procedure takes 5 to 7 minutes per eye, allowing both eyes to be treated in less than 15 minutes. However, we recommend planning for 60-90 minutes for this appointment to complete essential paperwork and prepare properly for treatment.
- Numbing the Eyes:
- A few drops of numbing solution are applied to the eyes to eliminate discomfort. These anesthetic drops take effect immediately – within seconds!
- Creating the Corneal Flap:
- Using a femtosecond laser, the surgeon creates a thin, hinged flap in the cornea. This step takes about 15 to 20 seconds per eye.
- Reshaping the Cornea:
- An excimer laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue based on the patient’s prescription. This process typically lasts 5 to 40 seconds, depending on the level of correction needed.
- Flap Replacement:
- The corneal flap is repositioned and smoothed back into place. This step requires 1 to 2 minutes per eye and is critical to ensuring proper healing.
LASIK Recovery: What to Expect
Right After Surgery
Most patients notice clearer vision immediately after LASIK, with continued improvement over the next several days. Since LASIK is an outpatient procedure, you’ll need a designated driver to take you home.
Once home, we recommend resting or taking a short nap to support the early healing process. When you wake up, your vision may already be noticeably sharper, but it’s best to take it easy for the rest of the day.
First 24 Hours
During the first day, it’s normal to experience:
- Mild dryness or irritation
- Blurry or fluctuating vision
- Temporary glare or halos at night
Most patients can return to work, driving, and other normal activities the following day.
Healing and Recovery
Your vision will continue to stabilize over the next several weeks. While many patients achieve excellent vision within a few days, complete healing can take up to six months.
To support recovery, use your prescribed antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and lubricating eye drops exactly as directed.
Follow-Up Care
Your first follow-up appointment is typically scheduled 24–72 hours after surgery so your surgeon can monitor your healing and answer any questions.
